How to get starteD

Options for starting a program.

1. One person can go to a school and mentor three children for the cost of a mentor’s guide and three texts. Mentor’s guide is $35.00 and each text is $19.00 for a total of $92.00 plus $6.00 shipping $98.00.

2. If you are interested in starting a program with multiple I suggest that you purchase a starter kit which has everything we can think of that you would need to run a program with as many mentors you want. The curriculum is not included and the kit costs $621.00. Several people have done this and it has worked very well for them.

3. The third level would be to bring myself or one of my associates to your city to meet with the Principal (school officials), train you and your staff and finally the mentors. Because I do men’s retreats I will often arrive on a Friday and teach men that evening with a training for all mentors (male and female) Saturday morning with a 2:00 departure.

These are some options. People have used the curriculum in various and creative ways.

TALKS utilizes a content-based curriculum that covers issues such as respect, peer pressure, relationships with siblings, anger management, work ethic, understanding different races and cultures, and having a positive attitude.  Each week, students and their mentor spend 30-45 minutes at their school working on a lesson in the curriculum.  Students read passages along with their mentors and discuss the relevance of each topic to their own lives.  Each chapter includes suggested questions for the mentor to ask the students and quotes for the children to memorize, to help mentors build a “bridge” of wisdom (Figure 1) for these children.  Key programmatic features of TALKS include teaching children how to disagree in a respectful manner, use of the dictionary as a fun learning tool, memorization of wisdom-filled quotes, and weekly recitation of the TALKS thesis statement.
